How to clean and care for quartz, granite and marble countertops
Stone and quartz countertops last for decades with very little work, as long as you use the right cleaner. Most damage we see comes from harsh products, not from cooking.
Everyday cleaning (all surfaces)
Warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap and a soft cloth, then dry with a towel. That is all most counters need. A pH-neutral stone cleaner is fine for a spray-and-wipe routine.
Quartz
Non-porous, so it never needs sealing. Avoid high heat (always use a trivet under hot pans; the resin can scorch) and strong solvents or oven cleaner. For dried-on spots, a plastic scraper and a non-abrasive cleaner. See quartz.
Granite and quartzite
Very heat and scratch resistant. Most need sealing every one to three years. The water test: if a few drops darken the stone within 10 minutes, it is time to reseal. Avoid vinegar and bleach, which dull the sealer over time. See granite and quartzite.
Marble
Beautiful and softer. Acids like lemon, wine, tomato and vinegar etch the surface (dull spots), and sealing slows stains but does not stop etching. Wipe spills quickly, use coasters and cutting boards, and embrace the patina. See marble.
Soapstone
Non-porous and needs no sealer. Many owners oil it with mineral oil to deepen the color evenly. Light scratches sand out with fine sandpaper. See soapstone.
Stains and problems
