Marble is metamorphosed limestone — heat and pressure recrystallise it into the soft, luminous stone that has finished the best rooms for centuries. The veining is calcite and mineral impurities; every slab is a one-off.
Marble is softer than granite or quartz and reactive to acids — lemon, wine, tomato and many cleaners will etch a dull mark into a polished surface. A honed finish hides etching and wear far better than polished. Sealing slows staining but does not stop etching. Many people come to love the patina; some don't. We'd rather you know before, not after.
