Getting a ceiling fan right

Size. The blade span should suit the room: small rooms take about 42 inches, bedrooms and kitchens about 52, living rooms 60, and great rooms 72 inches or more.

Height. Blades move the most air about 8 to 9 feet off the floor and at least a foot below the ceiling. Low ceilings suit a flush mount fan; tall ceilings need a longer downrod, which the builder adds for you.

Match the blade span to the room: about 42 inches for rooms up to 144 sq ft, 52 inches up to 225 sq ft, 60 inches up to 400 sq ft, and 72 inches or more for larger rooms and great rooms.

How long a downrod do I need?

Blades work best about 8 to 9 feet off the floor. An 8 ft ceiling needs no extra downrod (or a flush mount fan), 10 ft takes about 10 inches, 12 ft about 20 inches, 14 ft about 30 inches and 16 ft about 48 inches.
