Undermount vs drop-in vs farmhouse sinks

How a sink mounts affects how easy the counter is to wipe down, what countertops you can use, and what happens if you ever want to swap the sink. Here is how the three main styles compare.

Undermount

The sink hangs below a cut-out in the counter, so you can wipe crumbs straight into the bowl. It is the clean, modern look and the usual choice with stone and quartz. It needs a solid-surface counter (not laminate), and changing the sink later means working under a finished counter.

Drop-in (top-mount)

The rim sits on top of the counter. It is the easiest and least expensive to install and replace, and it works with any countertop, including laminate. The trade-off is the rim, where crumbs and grime collect.

Farmhouse (apron-front)

The front of the sink is exposed, and it usually needs a matching farmhouse sink base cabinet. Deep, wide and a focal point. Fireclay and cast iron are heavy, so the cabinet is reinforced. See the farmhouse sink guide.

Replacing just the sink
