Kitchen sink buying guide: material, size and mounting

The sink is the hardest-working spot in the kitchen. Material decides how it wears, bowl layout decides how you work, and the cabinet under it decides how big it can be.
Materials
- Stainless steel: tough, affordable, easy on dishes. Look for 16 or 18 gauge (lower is thicker) and sound pads so it is quiet.
- Granite composite: matte, hides water spots and scratches, available in colors; avoid very hot pans directly in the bowl.
- Fireclay: glossy, very hard and stain resistant; can chip on a hard direct hit. The classic farmhouse sink.
- Enameled cast iron: heavy, quiet and warm-looking; enamel can chip over decades.
Single or double bowl?
A large single bowl fits sheet pans and big pots and is the most popular choice today. A double bowl lets you soak on one side and rinse on the other. A 60/40 split with one bigger bowl is a good compromise.
Undermount, drop-in or apron
Undermount sinks sit below the counter so crumbs wipe straight in; they need a stone or solid-surface top. Drop-in sinks rest on the counter and are easier to replace. Apron-front sinks need a matching cabinet; see our farmhouse sink guide.
Size it to the cabinet
An undermount sink is usually about 3" narrower than the sink base cabinet: up to 33" in a 36" base. The sink and cabinet fit calculator checks yours.
Workstation sinks
Workstation sinks have a ledge that holds sliding cutting boards, colanders and drying racks, turning the sink into a prep station. They are worth it in kitchens short on counter space. Ruvati makes some of the best; browse sinks.
Depth and drains
9" to 10" deep is comfortable for most people; deeper bowls splash less but mean more bending. A rear-offset drain frees up cabinet space underneath and keeps the drain clear when the bowl is full of dishes.
Common questions
What gauge stainless sink is best?
16 or 18 gauge. The lower the number, the thicker and quieter the steel.
Is a granite composite sink better than stainless?
It hides water spots and scratches better and comes in colors; stainless is tougher with very hot pans and usually costs less.
What size sink fits a 36 inch cabinet?
Up to about a 33" undermount sink.
