Soapstone countertops: pros, cons and care

Soapstone is the quiet classic of New England kitchens: soft gray to charcoal, smooth and matte, with a warm feel under your hand. It behaves differently from granite or quartz, and it suits people who like a surface that shows its history.
What soapstone is
Soapstone is a natural metamorphic stone rich in talc, which gives it that soft, silky feel. Countertop grades are denser and harder than the carving grades, but still softer than granite or quartz. Colors run from light gray with green undertones to deep charcoal, often with thin white or green veins. See soapstone at our shop.
Where it shines
- Heat: it handles hot pans well, which is why it was used for sinks, stoves and lab benches.
- Stains: it is dense and does not need sealing. Oil and wine sit on the surface and wipe off.
- Chemicals: acids like lemon juice and vinegar do not etch it the way they etch marble.
What to expect
- Scratches and dings: it will mark, especially on edges. Light scratches blend in with mineral oil or buff out with fine sandpaper.
- It darkens: the stone deepens where it is handled and oiled. Many owners oil the whole top so it darkens evenly.
- Slab size: soapstone slabs tend to be smaller than granite slabs, so long runs and big islands may need a seam.
Care routine
Everyday cleaning is warm water and mild soap. Wipe on food-safe mineral oil every few weeks at first, then as often as you like the look; it is cosmetic, not protective. Skip harsh abrasive pads on the face of the stone. More in our countertop cleaning guide.
Who it suits
Soapstone is a great fit for farmhouse, colonial and cottage kitchens, bakers who want a cool surface and anyone who likes patina. If you want a surface that looks brand new for decades, look at quartz instead. Compare options in the countertop estimator.
Common questions
Does soapstone need to be sealed?
No. Countertop soapstone is dense and non-porous enough that it does not need sealing. Mineral oil is optional and only changes the color.
Does soapstone scratch easily?
It is softer than granite or quartz, so it can scratch and dent. Most light scratches disappear with mineral oil or a light sanding.
Can you put hot pans on soapstone?
Yes. Soapstone handles heat very well, which is one of the main reasons people choose it.
