Dishwasher buying guide: size, noise, racks and placement

A dishwasher runs almost every day, so small differences in noise, racks and drying add up. Here is what to compare before you buy.
Size
Most dishwashers are 24 inches wide and fit a standard opening. 18-inch compact models suit small kitchens and bars. Dishwasher drawers split the load into two smaller units. Browse dishwashers.
Noise
Dishwasher noise is rated in decibels (dBA). Lower is quieter, and the difference of a few decibels is noticeable in an open kitchen. If the kitchen opens to the living room, noise is worth paying for.
Racks and drying
- A third rack holds utensils and small items and frees up the lower racks.
- Adjustable upper racks fit tall glasses and pots.
- Stainless steel tubs hold heat and help dry better than plastic tubs.
Style
Stainless and black stainless are common. Panel-ready models take a cabinet panel so the dishwasher disappears. Hidden top controls give the cleanest front. See panel-ready appliances.
Placement
Put it right next to the sink, ideally on the side you naturally stack dirty dishes, and leave room to stand at the sink with the door open. Plan it with your cabinets in the kitchen cabinet designer.
Common questions
What size dishwasher do I need?
Most kitchens use a standard 24-inch dishwasher. Compact 18-inch models fit small kitchens, bars and secondary spaces.
What is a quiet dishwasher?
Look at the dBA rating: lower numbers are quieter. In open kitchens, a quieter model makes a real difference.
Can a dishwasher match my cabinets?
Yes. Panel-ready dishwashers take a custom cabinet panel so they blend into the cabinetry.
