Vanity width to the right mirror size and hanging height, for one sink or two.
Mirror width
A mirror should be a few inches narrower than the vanity, usually 2" to 6" in from each side. With sconces beside it, go narrower still so the lights fit over the vanity.
Double vanities
Either one long mirror across both sinks, or two mirrors each centered on its own sink. Two mirrors leave room for a sconce in the middle.
Hanging height
Keep the bottom 5" to 10" above the faucet or backsplash and aim to center the mirror around 60" to 65" from the floor. Read the mirror and medicine cabinet guide for more.

What size mirror for a 36 inch vanity?
About 24" to 32" wide, and 30" to 36" tall.
Should the mirror be wider than the vanity?
No. A mirror narrower than the vanity looks intentional and leaves room for lights.
