Bathroom mirrors and medicine cabinets: size and placement

The mirror is the most-used thing in a bathroom after the sink. Getting the width, height and lighting right makes a vanity look finished and makes mornings easier.

How wide

A mirror should be a few inches narrower than the vanity, usually 2" to 6" on each side. On a double vanity, use one long mirror or two mirrors centered over each sink.

How high

Hang the bottom of the mirror 5" to 10" above the faucet or backsplash, and aim to center it around 60" to 65" from the floor, which suits most eye levels. Leave room above for a vanity light if it mounts over the mirror.

Medicine cabinets

• Recessed: sits between wall studs (usually 14.5" wide openings), so it barely sticks out. Not possible where there is plumbing, wiring or an outside wall with insulation you do not want to compromise.
• Surface-mount: hangs anywhere and is the easy retrofit.
• Look for mirrored interiors, adjustable shelves and an outlet inside for toothbrushes and razors.

Lighted and anti-fog mirrors

LED mirrors add even, shadow-free face light, and many have a defogger, dimming and adjustable color temperature. Plan the power: most are hard-wired, so the electrical box needs to be behind the mirror.

Lighting around the mirror
