Shower niche ideas: size, placement and waterproofing

A walk-in shower with marble-look wall tile and a long recessed niche above a bench

A recessed niche keeps bottles off the floor and out of sight. The best ones look like part of the tile design, and they are planned before the first wall goes up.

Pick the right wall

Niches go between the wall studs, so interior walls are easiest. Avoid exterior walls in New Hampshire: cutting into the insulation makes a cold spot where condensation can form. The wall opposite or beside the shower head keeps the niche out of direct spray.

Size and height

A single stud bay gives about 14 inches of width. Wider or long horizontal niches need a header, which is easy during framing. Most people like the main niche between chest and shoulder height, with a lower shelf or second niche near a bench for shaving. Use the shower niche size calculator.

Line it up with the tile

The cleanest niches line up with grout lines so no thin slivers of tile are needed. Decide the tile size and layout first, then set the niche to match. Our tile layout previewer helps.

Waterproof it right

Niches are a common leak point. Use a preformed waterproof niche or wrap the opening with the same membrane as the shower walls, seal every corner, and slope the bottom slightly toward the shower so water never sits.

Design ideas

  • An accent tile or stone slab inside the niche.
  • A long horizontal niche that spans the wall.
  • A mitered or metal edge trim for a crisp finish.
  • A small LED strip for a night-light glow.

Common questions

How big should a shower niche be?

A single stud bay niche is about 14 inches wide. Height is set by what you store and the tile layout; tall bottles need at least 12 inches.

Can you put a shower niche on an exterior wall?

It is best avoided in cold climates. Cutting into exterior wall insulation can cause condensation and cold spots behind the tile.

How high should a shower niche be?

Most main niches sit between chest and shoulder height. A second, lower niche near a bench works well for shaving.
