Stud spacing and tile size to a shower niche that fits the framing and lines up with the tile.
Fit between the studs
With studs 16" on center, there is 14-1/2" of clear space, so most niches are 12" to 14-1/2" wide. Wider niches need a header in the framing.
Line up with the tile
Size the niche height to whole tile courses so there are no thin slivers. With 12" tile, a single niche is 12" tall and a double is 24".
Where to put it
On a wall that does not take direct spray, with the bottom 36" to 48" off the floor. Avoid exterior walls, which should stay fully insulated. See how to choose shower tile.
