How to choose tile size: large format vs small tile

Tile size changes how a room feels and how the job has to be built. Bigger is not always better, and small is not always busy. Here is how we decide.

What counts as large format

In the tile industry, a tile is large format when at least one side is 15 inches or longer. Today that includes 12x24, 24x24, 24x48 and even full porcelain slabs. See our large-format tile.

Why large tile works

• Fewer grout lines, so floors and walls look calmer and are easier to clean.
• Small rooms often look larger with bigger tile.
• Great for modern, spa and marble-look designs.

What large tile needs

Big tiles demand a flatter floor or wall, the right mortar and full coverage, or edges can sit uneven (called lippage). For long rectangles, installers usually limit the stagger to about a third of the tile length instead of a half offset, because large tiles have a slight bow. This is a job where prep matters more than tile price.

Where small tile wins

Shower floors need to slope to the drain, and small tiles like 2x2 or mosaics follow that slope and add grip underfoot. Small tile also suits curved walls, niches and vintage looks like hex and penny rounds. A linear drain lets you use larger tile on a shower floor, since the floor slopes one way.
