Shower base vs tiled shower floor: which to choose

Every shower needs a waterproof floor that slopes to the drain. You can get there with a one-piece base or a custom tiled floor. Each has a clear place.

Waterproofing matters either way

A base still has to be set level and tied into waterproof walls. A tiled floor needs a properly sloped, fully waterproofed pan under the tile. Pre-sloped foam and wet floor systems make custom and curbless floors more reliable.
