Shower door guide: frameless, semi-frameless, sliding or pivot

Swapping a shower curtain or an old framed door for clear glass is one of the fastest ways to make a bathroom feel bigger and newer. Here is how to pick the right door.

Frame styles

• Frameless: thick glass (3/8" or more) with minimal hardware. The cleanest look and easiest to clean; the most expensive.
• Semi-frameless: a frame around the edges but not the door itself. A good balance of look and price.
• Framed: thinner glass held in metal frames. The least expensive and forgiving of out-of-square walls.

How it opens

• Sliding (bypass): best for tubs and tight bathrooms because nothing swings into the room.
• Pivot or hinged: swings out; needs clear floor space in front. The classic look for walk-in showers.
• Fixed panel: a single glass wall with an open entry, great for large walk-in and curbless showers.

Glass and coatings

All shower glass is tempered safety glass. Clear glass shows off tile; frosted or rain glass adds privacy. A protective coating repels water spots and makes squeegeeing easier, which matters with hard well water.

Measuring

Measure the opening width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height from the curb or tub deck. Walls are rarely perfectly plumb, so most doors have an adjustment range; check that your smallest and largest measurements both fall inside it. Custom sizes are made to fit when they do not.

Installation
