Marble countertops: pros, cons and living with the patina

Nothing looks quite like real marble. It is also the countertop people worry about most. Knowing the difference between etching and staining makes the decision much easier.

Etching vs staining

Etching is a chemical reaction: acids like lemon, vinegar, tomato and wine dull the surface where they sit. Sealer does not stop it. Staining is liquid soaking in, and a good sealer slows that down a lot. Most marble owners learn to live with etching and prevent stains.

Honed or polished

A honed (matte) finish hides etch marks much better, because the etch is a dull spot and honed marble is already soft and matte. Polished marble looks glassy and makes etches easier to see. Our countertop finishes guide compares them side by side.

Choosing the marble

• Carrara: soft gray veining, the most common and most forgiving.
• Calacatta and Statuario: whiter backgrounds with bolder veins, more dramatic and more expensive.
• Dolomitic marbles: some are denser and more resistant; ask us which slabs in stock behave best.

Care that works

Seal on the schedule your fabricator recommends, wipe acidic spills quickly, use cutting boards and trivets, and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Etches on a honed top can often be lightened with a marble polishing powder or professional refinishing.

Where marble makes sense

Marble is lovely on a baking station, a powder room vanity, a bar top or a fireplace surround, where acids are rare. For a hard-working main kitchen, many clients choose quartzite or a marble-look quartz and put real marble on the island or a feature area.

Common questions

Does sealing marble stop etching?

No. Sealer slows staining, but etching is a chemical reaction with acids, and sealer does not prevent it. A honed finish hides etching best.

Is marble a good kitchen countertop?

It can be if you like patina. People who want a flawless surface are usually happier with quartzite or quartz.

How often should marble be sealed?

It depends on the stone and the sealer. Your fabricator will give a schedule; a simple water-drop test shows when it is time.
