Low water pressure in the shower: causes and fixes

Weak shower pressure is one of the most common complaints we hear. Start with the easy checks before calling a plumber.
Clean the shower head
Mineral buildup clogs the nozzles, especially with hard or well water. Soak the head in white vinegar, then rinse and rub the rubber nozzles clean. See well water treatment.
Check the flow restrictor
New shower heads include a flow restrictor to meet water-saving limits. A head designed for good performance at lower flow can feel stronger; see shower head types.
The valve cartridge
A worn or clogged cartridge in the shower valve can limit flow or cause temperature swings. Replacing it is a common fix; see the shower valve guide.
Whole-house causes
- A shutoff valve left partly closed after work.
- A pressure-reducing valve set too low.
- On a well, the pressure switch and tank settings.
- Old galvanized pipes narrowing inside.
When to call us
If pressure is low everywhere or changed suddenly, have the system checked. See plumbing.
Common questions
Why is my shower pressure suddenly low?
Often a clogged shower head or cartridge, or a shutoff valve not fully open. If every fixture is low, check the whole-house system.
Does a new shower head increase water pressure?
It can feel stronger if the old head was clogged or poorly designed, but it cannot add pressure the house does not have.
How do I clean a clogged shower head?
Soak it in white vinegar, then rinse and rub the nozzles clean.
