Shower valves explained: pressure balance vs thermostatic
The part of a shower you touch is the trim. The part that matters is the valve behind the wall. Choosing it right keeps you from getting scalded when someone flushes, and it is the piece you cannot easily change later.
Pressure-balance valves
The standard valve. It keeps the ratio of hot and cold steady when pressure changes, so a flush does not scald you. One handle controls temperature and volume together. Affordable and reliable, and all you need for a single shower head.
Thermostatic valves
A thermostatic valve holds a set temperature and usually has separate controls for temperature and volume. It supports higher flow for multiple outlets, rain heads and body sprays at the same time. It costs more but feels noticeably better.
Diverters and multiple outlets
A diverter sends water to a second outlet, such as a hand shower or tub spout. Two-way and three-way diverters let you run one or several outlets. Plan every outlet before the walls close.
Rough-in valve vs trim kit
Most brands sell the rough-in valve (inside the wall) and the trim kit (handle, plate, head) separately. The trim must match the valve brand and series, so check compatibility before ordering. The upside: you can change the look later without opening the wall.
Flow and water heaters
