Laundry room ideas: layout, storage and finishes

A good laundry room is a small room that works hard. A few smart choices turn a basement corner or closet into a space that makes wash day faster.
A counter over front-loaders
Front-load machines side by side with a counter on top give you a folding surface right where you need it. Leave about 1" above the machines for vibration.
Add a sink
A utility or laundry sink handles hand-washing, stain soaking and muddy boots. A deep single bowl with a pull-down faucet is the most useful.
Storage and hanging
Upper cabinets for detergents, a pull-out for the trash, and a rod or retractable line for air-drying. A tall cabinet holds the ironing board and vacuum.
Floors and walls
Choose a waterproof floor like porcelain or LVP, and consider a washer drain pan. See flooring types compared.
