In this climate the mudroom is not a nicety — it's the airlock that keeps sand, salt, snowmelt and firewood bark out of the rest of the house. A good one is mostly about dimensions and materials.

The dimensions that matter

• Bench: 17–19" seat height, 15–18" deep, at least 16" of width per person who'll sit to pull off boots.
• Cubbies: 12–15" wide each; a mix of open shelves and a closed section. Leave one tall enough for a backpack or a helmet.
• Hooks: two rows — one at ~40" for kids, one at ~66" for adults and long coats.
• Boot zone: an open tray or a slatted shelf at the floor, 6–8" tall, that you can hose or wipe.
• Walkway: keep 36" of clear floor to move through even with the bench full.

Materials that survive mud season

• Floor: porcelain tile (Daltile plank or stone-look), or a high-quality LVP. Both shrug off salt and water. Add a recessed walk-off mat or a drain if the space allows.
• Walls: a wainscot or full-height beadboard/MDF panel behind the bench takes the scuffs; paint the rest in a scrubbable finish.
• Bench top: solid wood sealed hard, or a stone remnant — something you can sit on wet.
• Heat: this is the one room where radiant floor heat earns its keep — it dries boots and melts tracked-in snow.

Fitting one into an existing house

Most NH houses don't have a dedicated mudroom — you're carving one out of the back hall, a corner of the garage, a wide landing, or borrowing a few feet from an oversized closet or the laundry. Where it connects
