The kitchen floor takes water, dropped cans, dog nails, and a chair scraping back a thousand times a year. Here's how the real options hold up in a New Hampshire house.

Solid hardwood

The classic New England kitchen floor, and it can be refinished for generations. It moves with our humidity swings, dents under a dropped pot, and doesn't love standing water — a dishwasher leak is the enemy. Best when it already runs through the rest of the main floor and you want continuity. Site-finished with a few coats of a hard commercial finish holds up well.

Engineered wood

A real wood wear layer on a stable plywood core. More dimensionally stable than solid — better over a slab, over radiant heat, and in a basement kitchen. Can be refinished once or twice depending on the wear layer. A sensible middle ground.

Bjelin / hardened wood

Woodura-type planks fuse a thin real-oak surface to a dense core — far harder and more dent-resistant than traditional engineered wood, in wide and long formats with click installation. A premium option that shrugs off mud season. See flooring.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)

The practical favourite for a busy family kitchen: 100% waterproof, quiet, warm-ish underfoot, forgiving of dents and scratches, and convincing wood looks now. It won't refinish and a gouge means replacing a plank, but for the price and the peace of mind it's hard to beat. CALI Longboards is the line we reach for.

Porcelain tile (including wood-look plank)

The most bulletproof floor there is — truly waterproof, scratch-proof, and the obvious choice over radiant heat (tile plus warm floor is a New Hampshire luxury). Downsides: hard underfoot and on dropped glassware, cold without radiant, and grout lines to keep clean. Large-format and rectified tile minimises grout. Daltile plank tile gets you the wood look that lasts forever.
