How to plan a room layout that works

A good layout feels effortless: you walk through without bumping into things and every seat has a reason to be there. It starts with a tape measure, not a shopping cart.

1. Measure the room

Measure wall to wall, then mark every door, window, radiator, vent and outlet. Note which way doors swing and how high the windowsills are.

2. Pick the focal point

Most rooms have one: a fireplace, a view, a TV wall or a bed wall. Arrange the main pieces to face or frame it.

3. Keep the walkways clear

• About 36 inches for main paths through a room.
• About 16 to 18 inches between a sofa and coffee table.
• About 36 inches behind dining chairs.
• 24 to 36 inches beside a bed on the sides you walk.

4. Size the rug and lighting

A living room rug should let at least the front legs of each seat sit on it. Center lighting on the furniture group, not only the room. See the rug size calculator and lighting layers.
