Living rooms
At least the front legs of every sofa and chair should sit on the rug, tying the seating group together. 8 by 10 feet is the most common living room size; 9 by 12 suits larger rooms.
Dining rooms
Chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out, so the rug should be the table plus about 24" on every side. A 6-seat table usually takes an 8 by 10 foot rug.
Bedrooms
A rug under the lower two thirds of the bed should run 18" to 24" past each side and the foot. That is about 8 by 10 for a queen and 9 by 12 for a king.
