The most common regret we hear after a renovation is not about a finish — it is "the lighting feels flat." Almost always the room got one layer when it needed three or four. Good lighting is a plan, not a fixture.

Layer 1 — ambient

The general fill that lets you walk through the room safely. In a kitchen that is usually recessed cans on a sensible grid; in a bath it is a central fixture or recessed. Get the spacing right — the recessed lighting layout tool gives you a count and spacing from the room size — and put it on a dimmer. Ambient alone is what makes a room feel like an office.

Layer 2 — task

Light aimed at the work surface, with no shadow from your own body. In the kitchen that means under-cabinet LED along every run — the single highest-impact lighting upgrade for the money — plus pendants over an island. In the bath it means sconces beside the mirror at eye level, not a downlight over it that throws shadows under your chin.

Layer 3 — accent

Light that adds depth: in-cabinet lighting behind glass doors, toe-kick lighting, a picture light, LED tape washing a backsplash or a niche. Accent light is what makes a photo of the room look three-dimensional instead of flat.

Layer 4 — decorative

The fixture you actually see and choose for its looks — island pendants, a dining chandelier, vanity sconces, an entry lantern. It carries the style. Size it up: most people go too small. Pendants over an island want to be spaced and scaled to the run — the pendant spacing calculator handles that.

Control ties it together

Every layer on its own dimmer, and ideally scene control at the door so "cooking," "dinner" and "clean-up" are one button each. Warm-dimming trims (that shift toward candlelight as you dim, like a real bulb) are worth the upgrade in living spaces and baths.

Plan it before the drywall

Fixture locations, switch legs and any cove or linear lighting have to be decided before framing and drywall — adding a circuit later means opening a ceiling. If you are renovating, take the lighting plan finder and bring the result to your designer so it is in the electrical plan from day one.
