Electric fireplaces: sizes, heat and installation

Electric fireplaces give you the glow of a fire with no chimney, no venting and no gas line. They go almost anywhere, from a living room wall to a bedroom or a basement.

Heat and power

Many electric fireplaces run on a standard 120V outlet with a heater of about 1,500 watts, enough to warm a room. Larger linear models are often hardwired, sometimes on 240V. The flame effect runs with or without heat, so you can enjoy it in summer too.

Sizing it to the wall

Choose a width that feels balanced with the wall and furniture, and consider how it lines up with a TV above. Recessed installs need a framed opening built to the manufacturer’s dimensions and clearances.

Flame looks

LED flame effects have come a long way. Look for adjustable flame color and brightness, media options like logs, crystals or driftwood, and a remote or app control.
