Fireplace surround ideas: stone, tile and more

The fireplace is the focal point of most New England living rooms. A new surround is one of the quickest ways to transform the whole room.

Stone slab surrounds

Granite, marble and quartzite slabs, like the surround pictured, give a clean, seamless look. Granite and quartzite handle heat best. Quartz should be kept away from direct high heat; ask before using it close to the firebox.

Tile surrounds

Large-format porcelain, zellige-style tile or classic subway turn a plain surround into a feature. Porcelain is heat-safe and easy to clean.

Hearths

A raised or flush hearth protects the floor from embers. A single stone slab hearth matching the surround looks the most finished.

Safety and clearances

Combustible materials like wood mantels need specific clearances from the firebox opening. Gas and electric inserts have their own manufacturer rules. We check these before any design is final.
