Double vanity or single vanity? How to decide

Two sinks sound like the obvious upgrade for a shared bath, but they cost counter space and plumbing money. Here is how to decide.

How much room you need

A double vanity needs at least 60"; 72" gives each person counter space. Below 60", two sinks leave almost no room to set anything down. See standard vanity sizes.

When two sinks win

• Two people get ready at the same time every morning.
• You want to avoid sharing a sink with kids or a partner.
• Resale in a primary bathroom.

When one sink is better

• Vanities under 60".
• You value counter space and drawers more than a second basin.
• A single large sink with two faucets or a trough sink can serve two people.

Plumbing and cost

A second sink adds a second faucet, drain and supply lines. Converting from one to two usually means opening the wall; it is best done in a bathroom remodel.
