Bathtub sizes: a complete guide

The right tub fits the space, the people who use it and the path into the bathroom. Start with the opening you have, then decide how deep you want to soak.
Standard alcove tubs
The most common size is 60 inches long by 30 or 32 inches wide, fitting between three walls. Longer alcoves take a 66 or 72 inch tub. Measure the finished opening, wall to wall, before you shop.
Depth and soaking
A standard tub holds about 14 to 16 inches of water depth. Soaking tubs go deeper, often 18 to 24 inches, which covers your shoulders. Deeper tubs need more hot water, so check your water heater.
Freestanding tubs
Freestanding tubs commonly run 55 to 72 inches long. Leave space around the tub for cleaning and for a tub filler, and check the drain location against the floor framing.
Corner and drop-in tubs
Corner tubs are often around 60 by 60 inches. Drop-in tubs need a surrounding deck or platform, which adds to the footprint.
Getting it in the door
Measure doorways, stair turns and hallways. A cast iron or stone tub can weigh several hundred pounds and may need floor reinforcement. Our tub fit calculator checks the opening and the path.
