Alcove tubs
Most alcove openings are 60" long and 30" to 32" wide. Measure wall to wall at the floor and again higher up, since old walls are rarely square, and buy the size that fits the tightest measurement.
Freestanding tubs
Leave about 6" around a freestanding tub so you can clean behind it, and plan the filler and drain location before the floor goes down.
The way in
The tub has to get into the room. Check every doorway, stair turn and hallway; a one-piece tub carried on its side needs an opening wider than its depth. The bathtub buying guide covers styles and materials.

Will a bathtub fit through a 30 inch door?
Usually, carried on its side, as long as the tub depth is under about 29". Measure the tub depth, not just the width.
