Bathroom sink types: undermount, vessel, integrated and more

The sink sets the look of a vanity and decides which faucet and countertop you can use. Here are the main bathroom sink types and what each asks of the rest of the vanity.

Undermount

Mounted under a stone or quartz top for a clean edge you can wipe straight into. The most popular choice with custom vanity tops. Needs a solid-surface counter and a deck-mount faucet.

Vessel

Sits on top of the counter like a bowl. A design statement in stone, glass or ceramic. Use a lower vanity (about 30") so the rim ends near 36", and a tall or wall-mount faucet. Splashing around the base takes a little more wiping.

Integrated

The sink and top are one piece, often cultured marble, solid surface or porcelain. No seams to clean and usually included with vanity sets, which keeps cost down.

Drop-in (self-rimming)

The rim sits on the counter. The easiest to install and replace, and it works with laminate. The rim collects some grime.

Pedestal and wall-mount

Great for small powder rooms: they free up floor space and feel open. The trade-off is no storage, so plan a medicine cabinet or shelf. Wall-mount sinks need solid blocking in the wall.
