Do I need a water test first?
Yes — always. Well water in the Monadnock region varies house to house: hardness, iron, manganese, sulfur smell, low pH, arsenic. The lab numbers determine the treatment; buying a softener off a shelf without a test often fixes the wrong thing.
Softener vs. filter — what is the difference?
A softener removes hardness (calcium and magnesium) so you stop getting scale and can actually rinse soap off. A whole-home filter handles taste, odour, sediment, chlorine and specific contaminants like iron or the rotten-egg sulfur smell. Many wells need both.
Will it fix water that eats my copper pipes?
Low-pH (acidic) water corrodes copper and leaves blue-green stains. An acid neutraliser raises the pH before the water reaches your plumbing — one of the highest-value fixes on an older NH well.
