How many CFM do I actually need?
Rule of thumb: about 100 CFM per linear foot of a standard range, or 1 CFM per 100 BTU for a gas range. A 36-inch gas range usually wants 600 CFM at the hood; a 48-inch pro range 900–1200. Run the CFM calculator for your range, then add for duct length and elbows.
Ducted or recirculating?
Ducted, every time it is possible — recirculating just filters grease and puts the moisture and heat back in the room. We only recirculate when there is genuinely no path to an exterior wall or the roof.
Do I need make-up air?
In New Hampshire, most jurisdictions require a make-up air system once the hood exceeds 400 CFM, because a strong hood can backdraft a furnace or water heater. We spec a powered or passive damper with the hood.
