Walk-in pantry design: size, shelving & layout

A walk-in pantry with open shelving and counter space

A walk-in pantry is near the top of almost every kitchen wish list. The good news: a genuinely useful one doesn't need much floor — it needs the right dimensions.

How much space

  • Reach-in (no walking in): a 24″-deep closet, 4–6″ wide, with a door. Shelves on the back wall. Surprisingly effective.
  • Small walk-in: about 5 × 5 ft — shelves on two or three walls, 24″ of clear floor to stand and turn.
  • Comfortable walk-in: 5 × 7 ft or 6 × 8 ft — room for a counter run, small-appliance parking, and deeper storage.
  • Walk-through / scullery: 6–7 ft wide with two doors, connecting the kitchen to the garage or mudroom.

Shelf depths that work

Deep shelves swallow things. Keep most shelving 12–16″ deep so nothing hides behind anything. Use one run of 20–24″ deep with a counter for the microwave, the mixer and the coffee station. Adjustable shelves beat fixed every time — your storage needs change. Leave 14–16″ of vertical space for small appliances and cereal boxes, 7–9″ for cans and jars.

The details people forget

  • Outlets — at least two on the counter run, plus one up high for a charging shelf or a second freezer down low.
  • Light on a switch at the door, or a motion sensor — not a pull-chain in the back.
  • A real door — a pocket door or a barn door saves the swing; a solid door hides the mess for guests.
  • Ventilation if it holds a freezer or wine fridge.
  • Floor that matches or complements the kitchen — you see it through the open door.

Fitting one in

Most walk-in pantries come from borrowing space — a coat closet, a chunk of the garage, part of an oversized mudroom, or square footage freed up by moving the fridge or removing a wall. If you're already opening up the kitchen, it's the moment to price it. Sketch it alongside the kitchen in our cabinet designer, then bring it to a consult.
