Steam showers: what it takes to add one

Shop Design Build · updated 2026

A glass-enclosed walk-in shower with marble-look tile and a rain shower head

A steam shower turns an everyday shower into a spa after a cold New Hampshire day. It is very doable in a remodel, but it has to be built as a steam room, not just a shower with a generator added.

A vapor-tight enclosure

Steam has to stay in. That means glass that runs to the ceiling or a sealed transom, a door with a seal, and walls and ceiling finished with tile or stone. Our shower glass is measured for steam enclosures.

Steam-rated waterproofing

Standard shower waterproofing is not always rated for steam. The walls and ceiling need a membrane system rated for continuous steam use, installed per the manufacturer. This is the part you never see and the part that matters most.

Ceiling height and slope

Lower ceilings heat up faster. Many enclosures stay around 8 feet or drop the ceiling inside the shower. The ceiling should slope so condensation runs down the wall instead of dripping on your head.

Sizing the generator

Generators are sized by the enclosure volume, then adjusted up for tile, stone, glass and high ceilings, since those materials absorb heat. The generator sits in a nearby vanity, closet or basement within the manufacturer’s maximum distance, and usually needs a dedicated circuit. Browse steam showers and generators.

Extras worth planning

A bench, a controller at seated height, aromatherapy ports and a good exhaust fan outside the enclosure all make daily use better. See custom tile showers and the bath fan sizing calculator.

Common questions

Can any shower become a steam shower?

Only if it can be fully enclosed and waterproofed for steam. Most steam showers are built during a remodel so the walls and ceiling can be done right.

How big a steam generator do I need?

It depends on the enclosure volume plus adjustments for tile, stone and ceiling height. Manufacturers publish sizing charts, and we size it with you.

Does a steam shower need its own circuit?

Usually yes. Most residential generators need a dedicated circuit sized by the manufacturer, installed by a licensed electrician.
