Rug size guide for every room

The most common rug mistake is buying one that is too small. A rug that is sized right ties the furniture together and makes the room feel larger.
Living room
Aim for at least the front legs of every sofa and chair to sit on the rug. In most living rooms that means an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12. Leave about 12 to 18 inches of floor between the rug and the walls.
Dining room
The rug should extend about 24 inches past the table on every side so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. A table for six usually needs an 8 x 10 or larger. Match a round rug to a round table.
Bedroom
- Queen bed: an 8 x 10 under the lower two thirds of the bed.
- King bed: a 9 x 12.
- Aim for 18 to 24 inches of rug on each side of the bed so your feet land on it.
Runners
In a hall, leave a few inches of floor showing on each side and at both ends. In a kitchen, a runner in front of the sink or range adds comfort; choose a washable or low-pile rug there.
Plan it first
Tape the rug size on the floor with painter's tape before you buy, or draw the room in our 3D floor planner. A rug pad keeps it in place and protects wood floors.
