One-piece vs two-piece toilets

Shop Design Build · updated 2026

A modern one-piece white toilet in a bathroom

Both kinds flush the same way. The difference is whether the tank and bowl are one casting or two, and that changes cleaning, price and how easy the toilet is to carry and repair.

One-piece toilets

  • No seam between the tank and bowl, so there is less to scrub.
  • A sleeker, more modern look, often with a lower profile.
  • Heavier and usually more expensive.

Two-piece toilets

  • The most common and most affordable style.
  • Lighter pieces are easier to carry up stairs and set.
  • If one part cracks, you can often replace just the tank or the bowl.

Flushing is the same

Flush performance depends on the flush system and the bowl design, not on whether it is one or two pieces. Compare MaP flush ratings and water use when you shop.

Choices that matter more

  • Rough-in: the distance from the wall to the drain, usually 12 inches. See the rough-in guide.
  • Height: comfort height is easier on knees; see comfort height toilets.
  • Bowl shape: elongated is more comfortable, round saves space.

Our take

Choose one-piece for a primary bath where looks and easy cleaning matter, and two-piece for value in a guest or basement bath. Our toilet buying guide covers the rest.

Common questions

Is a one-piece toilet better than a two-piece?

It is easier to clean and looks sleeker, but it costs more and weighs more. Flushing is not better just because it is one piece.

Why are one-piece toilets more expensive?

They are a larger single casting that is harder to make, so fewer pass inspection.

Can you replace just the tank on a two-piece toilet?

Often yes, if the manufacturer still sells the matching tank.
