For a typical kitchen remodel the room is genuinely out of service for three to six weeks — from demo through the point where the sink and one appliance are back. It's very manageable with a plan.

Set up a temp kitchen before demo day

Pick a spot with an outlet and, ideally, near a bathroom or laundry sink for water. A folding table or a section of the dining room works. Move over:

• The fridge (we can usually relocate and reconnect it to the temp spot)
• Microwave, electric kettle, toaster oven or air fryer, and a single induction burner — that combination covers most cooking
• A coffee maker — non-negotiable
• One set of plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery per person; one good pan and one pot; a sharp knife and a cutting board
• Paper plates and cups for the worst weeks (yes, really)
• A dish tub for washing at the bathtub or laundry sink, plus a drying rack

Pack the rest

Box everything else from the kitchen and label it by zone (baking, small appliances, pantry, serving). It makes the reload after install fast, and it's the perfect moment to purge the stuff you haven't touched in years.

Meal strategy

• Batch-cook and freeze a week or two of meals before demo — reheating is easy.
• Lean on slow cooker / Instant Pot meals, sheet-pan dinners in the toaster oven, and grill season if the timing works.
• Budget for more takeout than usual — it's a real remodel cost, so plan for it rather than being surprised.
• Keep breakfast and lunch simple: cereal, sandwiches, salads, fruit.

Keep the dust contained

A good crew seals the kitchen with zip walls and plastic, runs a negative-air machine, covers the path to the exit, and cleans daily — ask how dust control is handled before you sign. Still, close doors to bedrooms, change the furnace filter right after the project, and expect to do one deep clean at the end. Keeping the temp kitchen in a room with a door you can close helps a lot.
