2700K vs 3000K vs 4000K: choosing light color temperature

Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), is how warm or cool white light looks. It changes how your cabinets, paint and stone read at night, and it is the most common reason a finished room feels a little off.

The scale

  • 2700K: warm, like an old incandescent bulb. Cozy and flattering.
  • 3000K: warm white, slightly crisper. The safe choice for most homes.
  • 3500K to 4000K: neutral to cool white. Clean, bright, task-oriented.
  • 5000K: daylight. Very crisp, feels clinical in most living spaces.

Room by room

  • Living, dining and bedrooms: 2700K.
  • Kitchens: 3000K, or 2700K if you love warm tones. Under-cabinet lights should match the ceiling lights.
  • Bathrooms: 3000K, with high CRI at the vanity.
  • Garage, workshop, laundry: 4000K works well.
  • Outdoors: 2700K to 3000K; see the outdoor lighting guide.

CRI matters too

CRI (color rendering index) is how true colors look under the light, out of 100. Choose 90+ CRI for kitchens and bathrooms so food, skin, stone and paint look right.

Do not mix

Mixing 2700K and 4000K in the same space makes one look yellow and the other blue. Pick one temperature per room, and check bulbs and integrated LED fixtures before you buy. Many new fixtures have a selectable CCT switch that lets you set it on install.

How much light

Color is only half of it. The room lumens calculator tells you how bright, and the lighting layers guide shows how to combine ceiling, task and accent light.

Common questions

Is 3000K or 4000K better for a kitchen?

Most homes look best at 3000K. 4000K reads cooler and brighter, which suits very modern white kitchens or work areas.

What color temperature is best for a bathroom?

3000K with a CRI of 90 or higher, so skin tones look natural.

Is 5000K too bright for a house?

It is not brighter, just cooler in color. Most people find it harsh in living spaces; it suits garages and workshops.
