Kitchen cabinet organization: inserts that earn their space

Gray shaker kitchen cabinets with glass-front uppers and a marble-look backsplash

Most kitchens do not need more cabinets. They need cabinets that bring things to you. These are the organizers we recommend most often, and where they go.

Drawers beat doors down low

Deep drawers in base cabinets let you see and reach pots, pans and dishes without kneeling. Many clients choose drawer bases for most of the lower run. A peg system keeps plates in place.

Fix the blind corner

Corners are where storage goes to hide. Swing-out shelves, pull-out corner units and lazy susans in L-shaped corners bring the back of the cabinet forward. If you are designing new, sometimes a drawer corner or simply a filler is the better answer.

The small inserts that matter

  • Trash and recycling pull-out next to the sink.
  • Tray dividers above the oven or fridge for sheet pans and cutting boards.
  • Spice pull-outs beside the range.
  • Cutlery and utensil dividers in the top drawers.
  • Toe-kick drawers for flat items you rarely use.

Plan around what you own

Before choosing inserts, list what you store: the stand mixer, the big stockpot, the sheet pans. Then give each a home near where it is used. Our cabinet sizes guide and pantry guide help with the layout.

Try it before you order

Sketch your kitchen in the kitchen cabinet designer, then shop cabinet accessories or bring your plan to our showroom. Organizers can also be added to existing cabinets in many cases.

Common questions

Can I add organizers to existing cabinets?

Often yes. Many pull-outs, dividers and corner units retrofit into standard cabinet boxes. Measure the inside opening, not the door.

Are drawers better than doors for base cabinets?

For most people, yes. Drawers bring items to you and use the full depth of the cabinet.

What is the best blind corner solution?

It depends on the corner size. Swing-out and pull-out corner units work well, and sometimes a simple drawer corner is the best use of space.
