Grab bars: placement, blocking and styles that look good

Grab bars prevent falls, and they no longer have to look clinical. The key is putting them where hands naturally reach and anchoring them into solid wood.

Anchor into solid framing

A grab bar is only as strong as what it is screwed into. During a remodel we add blocking between the studs behind the tile in every likely spot, even if bars go in later. Suction-cup bars and towel bars are not grab bars.

Where to place them

• Shower entry: a vertical bar to hold while stepping in.
• Inside the shower: a horizontal or angled bar on the long wall, and one near the seat.
• Tub: a horizontal bar on the back wall and a vertical bar at the entry.
• Toilet: a bar on the side wall.

Size and grip

Bars about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter fit most hands. Textured finishes help when wet. Look for bars rated for commercial or ADA-style loads.

Common questions

How high should a grab bar be?

Horizontal bars are commonly set about 33 to 36 inches above the floor. The grab bar calculator gives typical heights for each location.

Can I install a grab bar on drywall?

Only into studs or solid blocking. Drywall anchors alone are not strong enough for a grab bar.

Should I add blocking even if I do not want bars yet?

Yes. Blocking is cheap during a remodel and lets you add bars later without opening the tile.
