Room and table size to the chandelier diameter, fixture height and hanging height that look right.
The room formula
Add the room length and width in feet; the answer is a good chandelier diameter in inches. A 14 by 12 foot dining room takes about a 26" chandelier.
Over a table
Keep the chandelier at least 6" inside the table edge on each side, so it is usually about 12" narrower than the table. Hang the bottom 30" to 36" above the table top, a bit higher with tall ceilings.
Fixture height
Allow about 2.5" to 3" of fixture height per foot of ceiling height: 20" to 24" in an 8 foot room. For long tables, a linear fixture or two smaller pendants often works better. The pendant spacing calculator helps there.
