Paint or stain is one of the first decisions in a kitchen, and it drives the whole look. Both are good choices — here's what actually separates them.

Painted cabinets

• Look: crisp, clean, bright. Hides the wood so the door style and colour do the talking.
• Cost: a premium over stain on the same line — typically 10–20% more — because painting is more labour and a factory finish is worth paying for.
• Durability: a good conversion-varnish or catalyzed factory finish is very tough. Over years, expect fine hairline cracks at the joints of a five-piece door as the wood moves — normal, not a defect.
• Touch-ups: harder. A chip shows, and a perfect blend usually means refinishing the door. Keep the touch-up kit the shop provides.
• Best on: MDF centre panels (won't telegraph seasonal movement) with a wood frame, or all-MDF doors for the flattest result.

Stained cabinets

• Look: warm, natural, shows the grain. Reads more traditional or more organic-modern depending on the wood and the door.
• Cost: the baseline — you're not paying for the extra paint steps.
• Durability: equally tough top-coat; the win is that wear and small dings blend in instead of standing out.
• Touch-ups: much more forgiving. A stain pen and a little top-coat hides most everyday marks.
• Best on: rift white oak, walnut, hickory, cherry, maple — pick the wood for its grain, because you'll see it.

The reliable middle: do both

A painted perimeter with a stained wood island (or vice-versa) has aged well and gives you the brightness of paint plus the warmth and easy touch-ups of wood where the kitchen takes the most abuse. What about resale?

Warm white and off-white painted cabinets, and natural light-stained wood, both show well to buyers in this market. Very dark stains and cool grey-toned paints without warmth date faster. Neither paint nor stain is a resale liability if the colour is a classic.
