Best bathroom flooring: porcelain, LVP, stone and more

Bathroom floors get splashed, steamed and walked on barefoot. The right floor handles water without a second thought, feels good underfoot and is not slippery when wet.
Porcelain tile
The top choice for most bathrooms: waterproof, durable and endlessly varied, from marble looks to wood looks. Pair it with heated floors to fix the one downside, cold feet.
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)
Waterproof, warmer and softer than tile, and faster to install. A good pick for kids’ baths and budgets. Avoid it where a toilet might leak unnoticed for long periods, and seal the edges.
Natural stone
Marble and travertine are beautiful and timeless, but porous: they need sealing and gentle cleaners. Honed or tumbled finishes are less slippery than polished.
Slip resistance
Choose a floor rated DCOF 0.42 or higher for wet areas, and prefer matte or textured finishes. Smaller tiles add grip through more grout lines.
Avoid
Solid hardwood and most laminate do not belong in full bathrooms with a tub or shower. See our flooring types compared and grout color guide.
